Flashback Close -up: Valentino cartoonish animals Haute Couture Collection

The more realistically the creatures were rendered here, the better off the clothes were. By contrast, a satin tiger practically pounced off the skirt of the finale dress. The workmanship was second to none, but the designers may have overestimated the big cat's charms. All in all though, this was another bravura performance.

Nearly every piece was heavily detailed and even when the looks could have easily seemed costumey — as with a gray coat with a cartoonish lion face on it — they never did thanks to wordly-wise silhouettes and spot-on fabric choices. Better yet, there was a lightness even to the most heavily embellished evening looks given the abundance of sheer and or fluid fabrics.
