Alice + Olivia FALL 2020 READY-TO-WEAR

Stacey Bendet debuted a dramatic new ’do at her fall 2020 Alice + Olivia showing this afternoon. She’s become known for her heavy black eye shadow and matching black hair, typically slicked back and up in a curly ponytail or messy chignon bun.

But today, standing in front of a pink set of large frames wearing a long lace pink dress that matched the step-and-repeat, Bendet showed off freshly cut and straightened locks dyed platinum blonde. Everyone, all of the A+O fan girls, customers, and influencers who come to Bendet’s fantastical party-meets-presentation each fashion season, wanted a picture with her. Bendet’s bubbly personality and “stream of consciousness” approach to design, as she puts it, have turned her into a money-making machine with a loyal following who want to dress just like her.

The clothes on display today underscored Bendet’s personal approach to everything she makes. She explained that she was inspired by the colourful interiors of her New York City apartment and the mixed fabric and artwork that surrounds her every day. Ball skirts with baroque patterns played into this visual nicely, as did the tapestry prints on frock dresses and puffer jackets. Bendet mashed up bell-sleeve tops and cropped trousers printed with dizzying floral motifs, and she showed some zigzag knits that also caught the eye. The designer didn’t have a through-line here in terms of a narrative, which she’s typically had in the past. But it was refreshing to see something more organic from her.

It should be noted that several pieces were designed using upcycled fabric, and all of the leather in the collection was made with environmentally safe faux leather instead of the real thing. Bendet took a more practical approach this season, despite the boldness and kaleidoscopic textures and prints. It all felt seamlessly personal, even amid the flashbulbs pointed in her direction.
